Trump is “really pleased” with progress on Ukraine peace talks
One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that “literally 90% of the issues between Ukraine and Russia” have already been resolved, though some matters still require discussion.
“We've moved considerably closer in narrowing the issues between the Ukrainians and the Russians. That's clear,” the official said, noting that multiple solutions are being proposed to bridge remaining gaps.
Another official explained that the security guarantees envisioned for Ukraine under a potential peace deal are “Article Five-like” assurances, referencing NATO’s collective defense clause, and would act as a strong deterrent. “The Europeans expressed a lot of appreciation for President Trump's willingness to lean into this issue and to offer such guarantees. Those guarantees will not be on the table forever. Those guarantees are on the table right now, if there's a conclusion that's reached in a good way, and President Trump's very focused on reaching a conclusion to this conflict that really stops the Russians from moving west,” the official said.
Trump is reportedly “willing” to submit these security guarantees to the US Senate for ratification, a step that surprised both Ukrainian and European negotiators, according to the officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described bilateral security assurances from the US, Europe, and other nations as a “compromise” in place of Ukraine joining NATO—a significant departure from Kyiv’s previous constitutional goal of alliance membership established in 2019.
Russia has consistently opposed Ukraine’s NATO accession, with President Vladimir Putin previously calling it a “direct threat” to Moscow’s security.
The officials said Trump “believes he can get Russia to accept” the proposed assurances, while noting that the Kremlin has indicated openness to Ukraine joining the EU, which would represent a major expansion of the Eurozone.
US officials also confirmed that they will participate in a dinner with Ukrainian and European leaders, including Zelenskyy, to review the progress of the talks, with Trump expected to join via call. Trump has been briefed twice on the negotiations so far, and further meetings are anticipated this weekend, potentially in Miami, Florida.
