World Chess Authority Approves Return of Russian, Belarusian Youth

(MENAFN) The global organization overseeing chess has approved a decision permitting young players from Russia and Belarus to take part in competitions while displaying their national emblems, aligning the move with guidance issued by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), according to an official announcement.

A statement released on Sunday by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) explained that its general assembly endorsed two separate motions during an online session held earlier that day. One proposal was submitted by Russia’s Chess Federation, while the other originated from the FIDE Council.

“Both resolutions referenced recent decisions and recommendations by the International Olympic Committee regarding players from Russia and Belarus,” the statement said, while also pointing out that the two motions vary in their technical approaches concerning the application of national symbols in adult team events.

According to the statement, the resolution introduced by the Russian Chess Federation urged the immediate restoration of national flags and anthems for both countries in all competitive formats.

FIDE further noted that its council would promptly apply the shared points of agreement contained in both resolutions, in accordance with IOC recommendations and “the most recent guidance from the Olympic Summit on access to sport and political neutrality."

The statement added that the FIDE Council views its own resolution as being "in force immediately as the baseline for operations," a measure intended to acknowledge and uphold the legitimacy of both approved votes.
