South Africa Considers Shutting Down Israeli Embassy
This information was disclosed by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, during a Q&A session held in the National Council of Provinces on Tuesday.
In reply to a query from EFF Member of Parliament Virgill Gericke concerning the progress made in implementing the National Assembly’s November 2023 decision to shut the Israeli embassy, Lamola explained that internal discussions had occurred among the appropriate governmental cluster.
These discussions aim to formulate a detailed memorandum for Cabinet evaluation.
”In accordance with the constitutional principle of the separation of powers, the authority to decide on the possible closure of the Israeli embassy in South Africa rests solely with the Cabinet.
”Once Cabinet has deliberated and reached a final destination, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation will act in accordance with these directives,” he said.
Lamola also confirmed that the Israeli embassy continues to operate at a downgraded level.
