Pakistan Urges Iran, Israel Ceasefire
(MENAFN) Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday appealed to the global community to take steps toward ensuring an "immediate" halt to hostilities between Iran and Israel.
He cautioned that any further intensification would harm not just regional stability but also international peace.
While presiding over a Cabinet session in Islamabad, Sharif reaffirmed the country’s alignment with Tehran and criticized Israel’s "naked" aggression targeting Iran, according to Pakistan’s state television broadcaster.
His statements came shortly before Pakistan’s Army Chief, Gen. Asim Munir, was set to hold discussions with US President Donald Trump at the White House later the same day.
Sharif stated he had already communicated with the Iranian president to deliberate on the shifting dynamics and to express Islamabad’s backing and unity with Tehran.
Previously, Pakistani officials emphasized Tehran’s entitlement to self-defense in the face of Israeli offensives.
The prime minister also denounced Israel’s ongoing operations in Gaza, accusing Tel Aviv of imposing a wave of "brutality."
Tensions in the region have sharply intensified since Friday, when Israeli forces launched aerial bombardments on various Iranian targets, including those related to military and nuclear infrastructure.
This incited Tehran to respond with retaliatory measures.
As a result of the conflict, at least 585 individuals have lost their lives, and 1,326 have sustained injuries due to Israeli strikes on Iran since last Friday.
Israeli officials have reported that no fewer than 24 citizens have perished and several hundred more have been wounded in Iranian missile retaliation.
