Madrid Shooting Kills Former Ukrainian Official
The victim, 51-year-old Andriy Portnov, was identified by both Ukrainian and Spanish sources.
He had just dropped his children off at the school located in the Pozuelo de Alarcón area of the Spanish capital.
Reports indicate that at least one unidentified assailant shot multiple times at Portnov before fleeing into a nearby park with dense vegetation.
The attack took place in a public area near the school.
Portnov had a notable political career, having served as a Member of Parliament (MP) and deputy head in the administration of Viktor Yanukovych, the pro-Russian president who was removed from office in 2014 following extensive protests.
Prior to this, he was also an MP with Yulia Tymoshenko’s party during her time in power.
After the revolution in Ukraine, Portnov left the country but returned in 2019 when Volodymyr Zelensky became president.
However, he left Ukraine again, and in 2021, he was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury. The U.S. government labeled him as “widely known as a court fixer” who played a significant role in controlling the judicial system and obstructing reform efforts.
