Taiwanese Leader Visits Military Units

(MENAFN) Taiwan's leader, William Lai Ching-te, visited an army base on Friday to engage with engineers and anti-submarine helicopter personnel in the southern city of Kaohsiung.

Lai referred to the engineers and the navy's anti-submarine division as the “cornerstones of the nation’s armed forces’ military strength, and also indispensable to the overall national defense strategy,” as stated in a post on his Facebook page.

He stressed that the engineers' mission is to "enhance the mobility of the troops," while the anti-submarine forces are tasked with "reconnaissance and patrolling."

This visit comes ahead of potential Chinese military exercises around Taiwan, coinciding with Lai's first anniversary in office on Tuesday, according to Taiwanese official Liang Wenjie.
China views Taiwan as a breakaway province, though Taipei asserts its sovereignty.
Lai assumed office on May 20 of last year.
