Putin, Qatari emir talk about predicament in Gaza, Syria
Both leaders expressed deep concern about the ongoing civilian casualties in Gaza. Al Thani pointed out that Israel had failed to honor a ceasefire agreement brokered by Qatar in January between Israeli and Palestinian authorities. He stressed that Qatar remains committed to facilitating a long-term ceasefire in the region.
Putin and Al Thani reiterated their support for a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing the tragic loss of civilian lives. Putin stated that a lasting peace can only be achieved based on the United Nations decision to create a Palestinian state.
The two leaders also discussed the situation in Syria after the ousting of President Bashar Assad by armed groups, including the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Putin affirmed Russia's commitment to supporting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while highlighting the need for international cooperation to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Al Thani shared details from his recent meeting with Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who expressed a desire to maintain strong relations with Russia. Both leaders emphasized the strategic nature of the historical ties between Syria and Russia.
Additionally, they praised the strong Russia-Qatar relations and committed to expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and regional diplomacy.
