Guinea's ex-president receives pardon despite conviction for 2009 massacre
(MENAFN) Previous Guinean President Moussa Dadis Camara, who was convicted of crimes against humanity for his role in a 2009 massacre, has been granted a presidential pardon by current leader Gen. Mamadi Doumbouya. The decree announcing the pardon was read on national television Friday by presidential spokesman Gen. Amara Camara, who cited "health reasons" for the decision.
According to the decree, "At the proposal of the Keeper of the Seals, a presidential pardon is granted to Mr. Moussa Dadis Camara for health reasons." Gen. Amara Camara further stated that the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Yaya Kairaba Kaba, is tasked with performing the measure.
Moussa Dadis Camara was found guilty in 2024 by the Dixinn Criminal Court for his involvement in the Sept. 28, 2009, massacre where 157 people were killed and 100 women were raped. He had been serving a 20-year prison sentence.
The announcement of the pardon comes shortly after the government stated it would provide compensation to the victims of the 2009 atrocities.
