US vice president calls on Greenland to sever ties with Denmark

(MENAFN) Amid ongoing US efforts to establish a stronger presence in Greenland, Vice President JD Vance has urged the island to sever its longstanding connection with Denmark and align itself with the United States, according to media reports.

During a short visit to the US Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland on Friday, Vance argued that Washington is “the only nation on Earth that will respect (Greenlanders') sovereignty and respect their security,” as reported by the media source.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance reportedly accused Denmark of neglecting Greenland, stating, "You have under-invested in the people of Greenland and you have under-invested in the security of this incredible, beautiful landmass." He made these remarks without providing supporting evidence for his assertions.

Originally planning a broader trip, Vance reportedly adjusted his itinerary after learning he might encounter protests in public areas.

Accompanied by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Vance stated that while the US has no immediate plans to expand its military presence on the island, it intends to invest more resources, such as naval vessels and military icebreakers.
