Media reports Jordan suggesting excluding Hamas chiefs from Gaza
(MENAFN) Jordan has suggested the removal of 3,000 Hamas military and political operatives from Gaza, according to a report by the Middle East Eye on Sunday, citing US and Palestinian sources familiar with the discussions.
The proposal includes further disarmament of Hamas and other militant factions in the enclave, potentially allowing the Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, to take control of Gaza.
The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel collapsed earlier this month, with both sides accusing each other of delaying negotiations meant to implement the second phase of the truce. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has warned that Israel may annex parts of Gaza if Hamas does not release the remaining hostages.
In February, US President Donald Trump suggested relocating the Palestinian population and turning Gaza into a US-controlled tourism hub, a plan that Arab nations rejected. Instead, Egypt proposed rebuilding Gaza without displacing its residents. Reports from Lebanese media also indicated that Egypt considered temporarily relocating 500,000 Palestinians to northern Sinai, though Cairo has denied any such plans.
Since Israel's military operation began in response to Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack, more than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed. During the ceasefire, which started on January 19, Hamas released 25 hostages and returned the remains of eight others in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinians freed from Israeli prisons, according to the Associated Press.
