Expelled South African Ambassador Shares Thoughts on Relationship with U.S.
Speaking to the public on Sunday, Rasool stated that he returned home "with no regrets." Despite his lengthy travel, he expressed a desire that he could have arrived back in South Africa with more concrete agreements secured with the US.
Rasool emphasized, however, that South Africa could not afford to let the US dictate its friendships or adversaries.
He pointed out that the country had been unable to “succeed” in refuting the "lies of a white genocide" narrative associated with South Africa.
He also underscored that withdrawing their genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) would not have helped South Africa gain benefits from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) of the United States.
He further elaborated that, despite the US's pressure, the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine would not stop if South Africa had withdrawn its case from the ICJ.
Rasool mentioned that without South Africa's involvement in the court, Israel would not have been held accountable, and Palestinians would have lost all hope.
Rasool made it clear that his message was not to claim that South Africa was opposed to America or had no need for the US. "We come here even after being declared persona non grata," he remarked, reaffirming the need to rebuild and reset the relationship with the United States moving forward.
