China refutes claims of asylum request by former Philippine president

(MENAFN) China has rejected reports claiming that previous Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte asked for asylum in Beijing prior to his arrest by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Foreign Ministry representative Guo Jiakun clarified, "Chinese government has never received any application for so-called asylum from him (Duterte) and his family," as reported by media sources.

Guo also confirmed that Duterte’s trip to Hong Kong was purely a private vacation, as addressed by both the Hong Kong Commissioner’s Office and the Philippines government.

The denial comes as Duterte’s daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, raised concerns over potential assassination threats if her father returns to the Philippines. However, the Philippine presidential office discarded these fears as "baseless."

Duterte is currently facing trial at the ICC for claimed offence against humanity linked to his contentious war on drugs, charges he has vehemently denied. He was arrested earlier this month upon his return from Hong Kong and was directly transferred to The Hague for prosecution.
