Philippine Coast Guard Ships Confront Chinese Ships in South China Sea
The Philippine ships had been dispatched 25 to 30 nautical miles east of Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea as part of a regular maritime patrol. They were reportedly blocked by Chinese vessels, according to a local English newspaper.
The West Philippine Sea refers to the area of the South China Sea that falls within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, as officially designated by Manila.
The recent confrontation was covered by SeaLight, a transparency project focused on tracking maritime activities in the South China Sea. However, neither Chinese nor Philippine officials have yet provided any comments on the situation.
Territorial disputes over islands and smaller features in the South China Sea have long been a source of friction and distrust between the nations in the area.
