Waltz unveils subjects of Russia-US discussions in Riyadh

(MENAFN) A potential maritime truce in the Black Sea will be a key topic in the upcoming US-Russia negotiations in Riyadh, US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz told CBS on Sunday. If agreed upon, the ceasefire would enable both Moscow and Kiev to resume trade, including the movement of grain and fuel, Waltz explained.

The US official praised Washington’s mediation efforts, stating that “we’re closer to peace than we ever have been.” The discussions, set for Monday, will involve indirect or "proximity talks" between US and Russian representatives. In addition to the Black Sea ceasefire, the agenda will include negotiations on a broader truce, including discussions on a line of control, verification mechanisms, and potential peacekeeping measures.

Waltz also indicated that the meeting will address long-term security guarantees for Ukraine and the possibility of a lasting peace agreement.

Last Wednesday, Waltz had a phone call with Yury Ushakov, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy aide, to coordinate details of the upcoming meeting. Ushakov confirmed the conversation and emphasized that the primary focus of the talks will be ensuring safe navigation in the Black Sea.

The maritime ceasefire proposal was initially raised by US President Donald Trump during a call with Putin on Tuesday. The Russian leader expressed support for the idea and agreed to begin discussions on the specifics of an arrangement.
