South Korea's Constitutional Court Rejects Premier Han’s Impeachment
(MENAFN) On Monday, South Korea's Constitutional Court ruled to reject the impeachment of Premier Han Duck-soo, allowing him to resume his duties as acting president amidst the current political unrest after the suspension of Leader Yoon Suk Yeol.
The court's decision, which passed with a 5-1 vote, overturned the National Assembly's move to impeach Han.
He had been accused of playing a part in President Yoon's brief declaration of martial law on December 3, according to a South Korean news agency.
The court's ruling came 87 days after the National Assembly's impeachment of Han, which had further intensified the nation's political crisis.
Opposition parties and civil society organizations continue to oppose Yoon's contentious actions.
Among the five justices who voted to dismiss Han's impeachment, four acknowledged that there were breaches of the Constitution and legal procedures in Han's decision to delay the appointment of additional justices to the Constitutional Court. However, they concluded that such actions did not warrant his removal from office.
In contrast, six justices dismissed the National Assembly’s claim that Han had actively supported Yoon’s martial law declaration, asserting that there was no evidence to justify the accusations.
